What is the relationship between art and consciousness? Is art therapy? Is art a catharsis for the soul? Is art an unconscious, dissociate process that protects us from uncomfortable reality? Does art serve to recover a lost sense of identity? In the animal world, or among those humans starving in a state of war-torn despair, living day to day, art frequently has no value or is diminished in its validity.
For those with their fundamental physical and emotional needs met, can art offer the path to higher consciousness?
In all cultures we see an eternal need to create art. What is the source of this need? Why is this need seemingly inherent in the human condition? If we casually scan the compulsion of humans to create art thereby placing their vision outside of themselves for validation, we will see that before art becomes form, it is an energetic. Once that energy comes to conscious knowledge, it is known as self and therefore owned. The ownership of self in an art form is the ego picking up more baggage for the journey, usually resulting in “my” art or “my” vision.
Let's position ourselves in the middle of western science and ancient eastern mysticism. We know the source of art and consciousness exists beyond the mind, beyond religion or any traditional method of learning. Art is unexplored territory. The pure source is filtered through the brain. What part of the brain? What part of the brain lights up when an artist is creating? Would a different part of the brain turn on if the artist's motive were higher consciousness vs. pride? Consciousness is energy, which goes through the brain (the processing machine) and thus, form called “art” is manifested.
My art represents my own personal step towards realization of source. It is created from a clear intention to know the self as consciousness beyond form. Someday, perhaps when we are a communal symbiotic organism of shared identity (all one in consciousness), art will no longer be a human compulsion, for then we will all be source.
Can art return us to the source of oneness? Will art eventually take us in the direction of it's own dissolution? Can art dissolve its source into beingness? Are source and beingness identical?
Beingness is the ultimate performance art. One doesn’t see authentic sages or avatars with a "body of work portfolio” or a “dotcom website". They don't have the compulsion to create art in order to validate their lives. They are being life; pure being in every moment is the validation.
Art can take us to the doorway of nonduality where we exit the vehicle for a Self propelled journey back to unfiltered unprogrammed essence. The empty canvas is the blank road map for my journey. The journey is to source consciousness. The vehicle is art.
